‘Repackaging’ the Legal Metrology Rules - An in-depth analysis of recent amendments

Virtual Webinar

14 March 2022 | 04:30 pm - 06:00 pm

The avowed objective of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 is to protect the interest of consumers from the perspective of security and accuracy of weighments and measurements. In furtherance of the same, Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011 (‘PC Rules’) inter alia mandates printing of specified declarations on commodities imported/manufactured and sold in pre-packaged form.

Recently certain important amendments have been proposed to the PC Rules and the same will be made effective from 01.04.2022.

The twin purpose of these amendments is to reduce the compliance burden of the industry at one end and to allow the consumers to make informed decisions at the other. However, the ground level implementation of these amendments is posing certain practical challenges for the industry.

This Webinar will seek to address key issues surrounding the amendments, including:

  • Omission of Rule 5 and relevance of the Second Schedule.
  • Computation of unit sale price.
  • Declaration of date of manufacturing in case of imported products.
  • Impact of deletion of illustrations w.r.t. declaration of retail sale price.
  • Emphasis on mentioning specific terms on the label.
  • Impact on the existing inventory of commodities lying with manufacturers / wholesalers/ retailers.
